Mui Ne

For one of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing spots in Asia, we recommend the resort of Mui Ne in Vietnam. Vietnam is fast becoming a world renowned spot- it is situated in South East Asia, with Thailand to its south west and Cambodia to its south east. The conditions here make it a very popular spot, as it has some of the best wind stats in the world, offering a cross onshore wind, very low rainfall and more or less guaranteed warm waters. It is for this reason that pro’s and beginners alike love this spot. You will also mix with a wide variety of people here, from travellers who are moving around constantly to kiters on holiday here to locals who live and breathe the sea. There is something for everyone here!

This is a relatively new resort, it only having been recognised in the last 10 years as a place that would attract people from all over the world. As the resort has got more and more popular so has the choice of restaurants, bars and hotels- there are all sorts of choices here depending on budget and taste, mainly specialising in, as you would expect, seafood! You can get the local catch cooked up right in front of you after a hard days kiting. One of the best things we love about this resort is the fact that it is still so unspoilt and un-commercial. All the locals are really friendly and will go out of their way to try and help you. The nightlife here is getting more vibrant, there are a few bars that open late or indeed all night if the mood takes you. Most people are too whacked at the end of the day to party too hard but if you have energy to burn you wont be short of entertainment!

The resort itself is surrounded by beautiful beaches- the type you would see on picture postcards, with palm trees and white sands. It also has amazing sand dunes nearby that can be accessed by a motorbike or jeep, and should really be seen to be believed!

The seasons here are divided into two clear sections- dry and rainy. The dry season is in our winter - September to April, and the wet season is the rest of the year. Although it is called the “wet” season, it is also still windy. It has an impressive 230 days a year over 12 knots! The dry season can be a little gusty, but can build to be a more consistent wind. Early season is the best time for beginners, as the water is flatter. For those who are a little more experienced, November and December may be better as the waves in this time of the year can be quite high.

The one main kite beach here is approx 10kms west from the fishing village but all along the coast are fantastic little spots for all levels including the former military base of Phan Rang. Here you will find two reefs, glassy flat water areas and a solid 25-30 knots, fantastic!

The Spot & Conditions

The best time to travel to Mui Ne for reliable winds is between November and March although the shoulder months either side can produce good conditions and there is a bit more space on the water. You will find light winds in the morning and stronger winds in the afternoon averaging 20+ knots but often more.

The water  state varies varies from small choppy conditions to bigger swells, the latter which of course offers great conditions for wave board riders. There are other spots around Mui Ne offering a variety of conditions, check in with the kite school on the day for where is going off.

Must do trips are the 15km downwinder to Phan Thiet from Mui Ne or try the various wavespots including  Turtle Bay or the former military base spot at Phan Rang which has two big reefs, giving large waves and flat water at low tide.

Situated in the middle of Mui Ne Bay and run by sponsored Core rider Rob and his team there is plenty of space on the beach to set your kit up. In front of a former hotel and 5 minutes from the main properties on Mui Ne.

There is a host of other activities to be getting up to other than enjoying the wind! Lots of them are based around the water, such as paddle boarding, kayaking and surfing but you can also enjoy the sites and sounds of a vibrant Asian country. There are lots of historical monuments and places that are easily accessed by taxi and these are readily available and cheap. This is definitely not a place to get bored in!
