Sotavento

Sotavento is the main kitesurf beach in the southern part of Fuerteventura and enjoys the famous strong winds - fuerte & ventura - that the island is named after.

Although we can never guarantee winds, this spot is the place that has the most consistent winds throughout our summer from April through until September. Generally it has shallow, flat water which is great for beginners but it also offers world class conditions and for the last two decades has played host to both the kitesurf & windsurf world cup. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be world class to enjoy the spot, the centre is 400m from the hotel and also has a tidal lagoon to get to grips with the basics of kiting or windsurfing.

60km from the airport, the resort itself is based around the stunning & massive beach. There is a variety of activities to do in the area, the island is well known as a holiday destination so also perfect for any non kiting partners or children.

Transportation isn’t an issue on the island although we do recommend hiring a car if you want to explore as there are a number of lovely little villages that are only really accessible by car rather than bus. We can arrange for a car to be collected at the airport on site to speed up your arrival, a lot of other hire companies need to bus you off site which can slow down your arrival at your chosen accommodation.

The nightlife here is also pretty good, the islanders definitely know how to party and throughout the year there are various festivalsd around the island. Sotovento is a bit lower key than say Correlejo in terms of nightlife. Sotovento’s is based around the bars & restaurants of Costa Calma whereas Correlejo had a variety of late night bars and clubs for the night owls!

The Spot & Conditions

Perfectly suited for all levels of kiter,  from beginners learning in the shallows to flat water freestyle further out.  With a spring tide in the summer the lagoon,  or Le Barca as its known locally, fills and offers a really protected and safe spot for those starting out.

In the summer months the trade winds blow down from the North of the island and all the way along the ridge in the middle of the island. As they reach Sotavento, the ridge ends and they accelerate out through the gap in the mountains giving superb conditions for getting onto the water.

In the winter months these same trade winds head south to the Cape Verde Islands and are replaced by winds formed from depressions in the Atlantic. As mentioned previously, these depressing create an all or nothing type situation, anything from light breezes through to full on gales.

The Centre

Windsurfers and kiters have been coming to Sotovento for over 25 years and it plays host to both the windsurf and kitesurf world cup. A fantastic spot right in front of the Melia Goriones on the huge sandy beach is the perfect base for your kiting holiday whatever your experience.

When not on the water, hang out at the kite centre on their sunbeds and hammocks,  or enjoy a lunch either here at the beach bar or back at the hotel. If you need to check in with the office or catch up on your emails, there is also complimentary WiFi.

Theres lots of activities all over the island but we recommend a few days car hire to really get a feel for the place. Theres villages like El Cottilo overlooking a fantastic surf beach or hire a bicycle and make the most of the very smooth tarmac roads that ring the island. Jump on the ferry from Correlejo and explore Lanazarote or ride a camel or quad bike for some impressive holiday snaps!
