Soma Bay

Soma Bay is a private resort located around 45kms south from Hurghada Airport. It offers one of the best kitesurfing holiday spots in the world due to it’s flat, pristine sandy beaches and selection of luxury hotels. It is a fantastic resort and we have many people who love this spot so much that they keep coming back year after year! The resort is split into two main areas: Abu Soma to the south of the bay and Soma Bay to the north. Soma Bay itself is a peninsula surrounded by sea on all sides. And about 5km in length and 2km wide, the peninsula is accessed via a 7km private road. There is a free shuttle service that runs around the resort between all of the hotels and the kite centre.

As the resort comprises a number of different hotels, they all cooperate together and have a “dine around” agreement with each other. This means you can eat wherever you want in the area. This is great for those wanting to sample different menus at different places most nights! They are all very well designed and most of them have amazing views out to the bay, making having a coffee in the morning that more special!

The resort is well renowned for beginners and improvers alike, as it has waist-deep water and calm, flat surface. There is also the added benefit of super clean wind and you are able to build up your confidence here if that is what you need to do.
There are also a number of activities for those who have non-kiting people in their party such as golf, spas or snorkelling and diving. Les Thermes Marins des Cascades is one of the regions largest spa and thalasso centres offering a full range of treatments from its extensive facilities’. Thalassotherapy treatements help to promote relaxation, beauty, slimness, improved blood circulation and the relief of minor back and neck ailments. All in all something that every hard working kiter could do with after a hard day on the water! There is also a long pier that is amazing and leads out to the house reef which is superb for diving and snorkelling.

It is a relatively new resort and so is still being developed. There is no town as such, so your stay is based around your hotel hence the choice of one is important and they are all very good.

The Spot & Conditions

Soma Bay is the northern side of Abu Soma and is one of our favourite kitesurfing spots in Egypt. The conditions are amazing with flat water provided by the sand bar that runs all the way up to the top of the bay.

Its an ideal place for intermediate & advanced kitesurfers who can practice new tricks on the flat water in plenty of space with full safety & support from the kite centre.

Because of the topography of the area, Soma Bay has a naturally accelerated wind caused by the mountain ridge heading towards Hurghada and as a result the bay usually had an extra 5 knot advantage of the neighbouring spots.

As mentioned, the winds are mainly cross off here, so not ideal for learners although of course there are full centre support and lessons at all levels.

Downwind from the centre is Tobias Island and the centre offers downwind blasts down here for the day and boat support for the return trip with lunch and drinks included whilst upwind you will find enviably butter flat water.

The Centre

A superbly equipped centre with a tasty restaurant serving up a varied and international menu to keep you fuelled and on the water - we love the 'kite burger' but theres something on the menu for everyone! After lunch or between sessions, relax on the sun loungers or head up to the sun deck with great views of the action and the coastline. The kite centre is served by a regular courtesy bus  throughout the day from 9.00 am to and from all of the hotels in the bay.
