Boa Vista

Boa Vista is another of the Cape Verde islands and slightly smaller than Sal being 650 km2. It is rumoured that the islands were the last crumbs in Gods hands after creating the world and these crumbs fell into the Atlantic Ocean and became the Cape Verde islands.

Actually the result of volcanic activity the island is very flat and its highest point being 390 m and the island is mainly closedcovered with sand, so the island understandably is famous for its dunes, desert and beaches. Altogether 55 km of white sandy beaches run around the island leading into the crystal clear blue water of the Atlantic Ocean being a fantastic playground for all levels of kitesurfers. The sand originally comes from the Sahara and is blown with special winds onto the island.

The capital of Boa Vista is Sal Rei with a ferry port and the airport. The hotel is very close to the capital and can be reached in about 10 minutes. The majoritoy of Boa Vistas population lives in Sal Rei and it has to be mentioned that the current population is only about 4,500 people.
All in all Boa Vista is a paradise for kitesurfers and holiday makers and is developing into a fantastic holiday destination whatever your interests. The breeze that blows constantly and the warm temperatures make Boa Vista very attractive for all kitesurfers and we can wholly recommend this destination!

The Spot & Conditions

Boa Vista, like it neighbour Sal, is a perfect place to kitesurf as it has 90% windy days in the Cape Verdian wintertime, which is from October until May. The air temperature during winter is round about 23 degrees instead and the water temperatures vary between 21 degrees and 29 degrees and make the kitesurfing to an enjoyable adventure. During the time from October to March the waves can be up to 2-3 meters high and offer a bit more of a challenge for advanced kite surfers, but even beginners can learn to kitesurf safely in one of the flat and shallow lagoons. To the North West you will find Bahia with cross offshore winds holding up the small waves but be warned, it can be gusty.

The Centre

Our partner kite centre Surf Vista is located directly in front of the hotel. The team is very competent and gives kite surfing lessons for beginners as well as advanced kite surfers and improve the surfers’ abilities quickly. The largest kite school on the island it has 10 instructors who between them can teach in 7 different languages. They provide perfect tuition for all students and teach individually so everybody will be progressing quickly. In front of the hotel the launching can be challenging to launch with a shore dump but if you walk upwind 300 metres you will find a flat water spot and also the beginners kite and windsurf lagoon, perfect! Here the wind is slightly cross off shore from the right. For side to side on conditions you will want ot head south to the Iberostar and Royal de Cameron hotels beaches. Santa Maria, home to the infamous ship wreck has a strong current running and is quite on shore so difficult to head out and the safest beach for beginners is Ponto Antonia with small waves and cross onshore winds. A car is helpful but not necessary as on the main beach in front of the Riu there are conditions for all levels.
